Laser Hair Removal
Photoepilation, or 'hair removal using
light,' has gained dramatic popularity over the past several
years. Excellent clinical results, as well as low-risk success for
many practices have contributed greatly to the sensation of this
amazing procedure.
While many methods can eliminate unwanted hair, very few can
eliminate hair regrowth while leaving the surrounding skin
undamaged. And photoepilation is quickly becoming the most
popular.
Lasers and light sources use the principle of selective
photothermolysis to eliminate hair and its potential regrowth
without damaging the surrounding skin. During a treatment, light
passes through the skin and is absorbed by the melanin in the hair
shaft. This absorption raises the temperature of the hair follicle
and thermally destroys the cells responsible for regrowth. The
attributes of the light (wavelength, pulse duration and power) are
chosen to ensure damage to these cells and not the rest of the
skin.

The 1064 nm of the MedliteTM C6 is
the wavelength of choice because it can penetrate deeply enough to
damage the hair bulb with minimal risk of hyper- or
hypopigmentation, and other side effects on patients with darker
skin types (Fitzpatrick Type VI), and tanned skin. The risk of
pigment changes, blisters and burns is not an issue with the
MedliteTM C6 because the the hair removal action is
photomechanical rather than photothermal. Because there is no heat
transmitted to the surrounding skin areas, the treatment is
comfortable, and no additional costly and cumbersome cooling
devices are needed. Studies with the MedliteTM C6 have
shown significant delay in hair regrowth following several
treatments.
